Sustaining clinical competency in compression bandaging for nurses working in the community

To determine the best education framework to sustain clinical competency in compression bandaging for District Nurses working in the community, two literature reviews were undertaken to answer this study question. Research identified that training programmes are beneficial in the initial stages of skill acquisition in compression bandaging, however competency was not sustained term. No research was identified which explored specific educational strategies other than using an external pressure monitor when the compression bandage is applied. While sound educational frameworks are needed to sustain competency, very little is known about the best educational method for sustaining competency. This dissertation found no educational programme or strategy that would ensure that clinical competency in compression bandaging was sustained over a long period of time. There is however evidence suggesting that a blended learning approach using face to face and e-learning tools might lead to sustained clinical competency in compression bandaging.
